I realize your post may be more focused on multimedia than the screen vs. paper debate, but I'm on a rampage about AU's e-text intitiave (forcing e-text is absolutely unethical), so thought I'd share my thoughts:
Screen is shown to be both more energy intensive to read and more difficult to navigate vs. paper. E-text is great for searching, but paper is more conducive to learning. Also, a significant percentage of people suffer from eye strain, dizzyness, and headaches from prolonged screen use.

Thank you Shawn for sharing your thoughts and the article. I do feel for this sentence: " ... people consistently say that when they really want to dive into a text, they read it on paper." Whenever I found a good article and decide to read it closely, I print it out. Maybe it is fair to say screen is for browsing, paper is for reading?

Though you need an aggregator point /system to gather all these info (of the potential learner)
The problem is if such details are partial listed in different resources (facebook, picasa, homepages etc) you will need authorization to gather all these personal preferences. Or you may assume that someone will have a public profile (so all the learner's characteristics can be easily retrieved)
Are you thinking of a process similar to knowledge elicitation that the user of the AGL should go through prior using such system?

Very good point, Avgoustos. I think you basically listed two ways of gathering the learner's characteristics. In the first way, I think a learner might not mind to authorize their social profile for the learning purpose, but of course they need to manually approve it. In the second way, learners' would think it is worthwhile to describe themselves through an elicitation system since they want to learn and get credits. Therefore, I am thinking if it is very possible that we combine the two ways of retriving.
