In which the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives save the day

I should be writing something else right now, but I'm on a train and I'm just a tad motion sick, so I'm going with the less-challenging task of making space for my upcoming research project.

The project I'm working on is an index for the CLGA of early issues of On Our Backs, one of the earliest lesbian pornographic periodicals. Originally, it wasn't for the CLGA -- it wasn't even my idea. I applied for an internship advertised by oob's copyright holder, She Who Shall Not Be Named, and she committed some truly spectacular last-minute flakiness. The CLGA saved the day by giving me the same internship, but with BONUS! librarian who knows everything there is to know about "the lost art of indexing" (makes sitting in a pile of periodicals with a thesaurus sound glamorous!) and a lot more control over the products of my labour. The last level of the CLGA's process for approving the project was cleared today, so setting this up is my huge giant sigh of relief.

What sorts of fun documents do I have?

Well, I have a learning contract! Yay! And I have a tangentially-related proposal for a grant to study a burlesque troupe and donate the research materials to one of the archives I'm studying. Everybody loves grant proposals!

In a few weeks, I will start going through the oob content, and then I'll have all sorts of steamy gay pictures and passages to read and blog. That's probably more fun than the grant proposal. :)
