The ICC has launched the world's first attempt to prosecute a jihadi for the war crime of cultural destruction of ancient shrines in Timbuktu.  The court is using this prosecution to deter  radicals in Syria, Iraq, Libya and elsewhere who have begun destroying historic shrines and cultural monuments.  At issue is ideology, symbolic meanings, and "spiritual certainty".

This article will be of particular interest to students enrolled in Anthropology 272 as these issues are  discussed extensively in the latter units of the course.
