Citing sources is a key feature to academic writing as it helps strengthen your argument in your work.  It further supports what you’re stating and gives support by providing other research and academic professionals that completed data collection and thoroughly studied the material.  It also saves time, as not everyone is in the position to conduct their own studies and databases.

Citing sources is also a critical component of avoiding plagiarism, as plagiarism is part of the student responsibility and is often outlined in academic syllabi and institutional guidelines. Plagiarism can be both an intentional and unintentional act and can have dire consequences to students and instructors when committed.  It is essential to credit original authorship and maintain professional accountability when submitting work academically and in non-academic environments.
