Competency Matrix in E-portfolios

It's customary to build a table or matrix to illustrate how student meets the core skills, knowledge and competencies. These efforts being two-dimensional do not fully allow us to visually demonstrate the ongoing process of one's overall professional and personal advancement. There must be another way to present this progression, perhaps a third or fourth dimension is needed?
