I found this article very intriguing. I believe as a counsellor, a large portion of clients are people who carry many burdens yet are not mature enough to overcome them; and, in many cases, also are not mature enough to even want to overcome them. These people are absorbed in self-pity and want everyone to understand and sympathise with them while they have no intention of changing and becoming stronger through their struggles. These kinds of people seem to think they are the only people that bad things happen to and carry a "poor me" attitude. Since a counsellor’s main goal is to help people who come to them, I encourage responses to the following question:
What should one do who is trying to help these people overcome their problems and struggles while feeling frustrated at the person for not wanting to grow and listen to ways they can better their life?
It is easy to imagine clients as easy going and cooperative but in reality it's all too common to have clients who prove themselves quite the opossite. This point is demonstrated in the Psy 406 textbook in the second chapter under, "Issues faced by beginning therapists."
I know from personal experience, people like this often are the first to share their problems with me, yet I know they don’t want advice nor do they even want to change their perspective to a more positive productive approach.
