This is a reflection on Thomas Sheppard's post on his newest tutorial on using Audacity for m-casting.I am interested in field blogging as a literacy instructor of adults, to model story-telling in natural conditions, and need to be able to record in outdoor conditions, with plenty of ambient sounds, wind, moisture - lots of moisture :)On the other hand, I would like to modify the level of sensitivity to pick up various outdoor sounds, such as eagles, raven flapping their wings overhead, raven song, waves, rain, the north wind...Ideally, I would like to be able to record while in motion, whether on a ferry or seaplane, even, so vibration and machine noise will also be factors to consider. Is there a solid portable voice recorder that has both a USB port to connect to a PC, but which can also attach to a high-quality microphone?Thomas referred to the Mobile Field Stereo Recorder, with the potential for 4 trac recording. I am also impressed with the additional features for mobile recording, including on-board studio effects compression, limiting and mic modeling, four hours of continuous recording operation from 2 AA batteries, and it includes a 512MB Secure Digital (SD) card.I am interested in "walk-blogging", and am looking into ways of capturing ideas while on the move, say, during my daily walks, which last about 30 minutes or so twice a day. I would need a way to protect the equipment from the elements, a way of being able to record my voice while moving, and a way for the device to stop recording once it does not hear my voice. I would also need a device that has a few hours of battery life, has some way of being protected by wind and rain and vibration.
