In which I get my first go-to-expert interview with a journalist on the subject matter of my doctorate (the North American rave scene). It's interesting how the decline and fall of Toronto dance culture has become a perennial media subject since about the time I defended, in 2005. There are issues of neoliberalism, regulation, youth, and cultural production that evidently continue to resonate from the premillennial tensions over rave culture well into this unsteady new century, from the hermeneutics of suspicion that made drum & bass - the first inherently digital music form - so jumpy, to their red-eyed redeployment in its lurching, leery progeny, dubstep.
