Great post from Dave Cormier on the differences between learning and education. A central point of the article is that learning always happens, regardless of what we (think we) teach, and that there are almost always very many things we teach that we do not intend to teach, many of which are good, but many of which can be very bad indeed. Education, he suggests, is "something a society does to its citizens", and it is about a great deal more than learning what is explicitly taught. His question 'what is education for?' has many complex answers and opposing points of view but, as he says, we really need to have (inevitably ever-evolving and multifarious) answers if we are going to do it right.
