There is limited government monitoring of radiation and its effects on fish stocks. In response the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is asking citizen scientists for their help. In January, Ken Buesseler, senior scientist and director of the Center for Marine and Environmental Radioactivity at the U.S.-based organization launched a citizen science initiative dedicated to collecting and analyzing seawater along North America's West Coast. There are two samplinjg sites in Canada - Haida Gwaii and Bamfield on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Data collected as part of this project will be published at How Radioactive is Our Ocean?.
