A digest of Orwell's still recommended rules for good writing in English, taken from his essay "Politics and the English Language."

Also good, from the same blog, only more fiction-specific: Jonathan Franzen's ten rules for writing. Well, number eight isn't so fiction-specific:

8. It’s doubtful that anyone with an internet connection at his workplace is writing good fiction.
