Virtual World Development Group

Owner: Robert Heller

Group members: 21

Description:

Virtual worlds are computer-based simulations of 3 dimensional environments in which users are represented as avatars with the ability to navigate and communicate within the virtual space. For distance education, virtual worlds provide an opportunity for instructors and students to augment learning outcomes with both social and spatial presence, features that are traditionally affected in distance education. Importantly, virtual worlds can be used to enhance both synchronous and asynchronous learning activities. We encourage faculty to visit AU's island in Second Life by downloading the viewer (http://secondlife.com/support/downloads/?lang=en-US) and visiting http://slurl.com/secondlife/Athabasca%20University/122/127/27.

Brief description: This group seeks to establish a virtual world at AU that can be used by AU staff and students to meet professional, academic, & research needs.
