The Robotics Primer: Chapter 5

Automated path planners such as Google Maps could find the optimal path by comparing all possible paths and selecting the one that would take the least amount of time. However, they probably do not need to compare absolutely all possible paths because there may be an algorithm used to narrow down the number of paths considered to reduce the number of comparisons required.
