Día de los Muertos

In communities of Mestizo and Yucatec Maya heritage, some families observe the cultural tradition of "Los Finados"; it also known as "Hanal Pixan" and "Día de los Muertos". Finados is a spiritual celebration that commemorates the souls of departed loved ones with altars filled with their favourite warm foods and drinks, treats, and personal items. It is believed that the souls return to earth during this time and consume the steam rising from the foods and drinks. Today, 1st November is observed as "Día de los Angelitos" and honours the souls of children. 2nd November is observed as "Día de las Animas" - All Soul’s Day - remembers all adults who have passed away. The tradition of Finados is still celebrated in many rural communities and towns throughout Belize.
