Unit 3.2 - Case Study - Food Insecurity in Newfoundland and Labrador

While searching for a case on food security in Canada, I discovered a study (Reza & Sabau, 2022) focused on the effects of climate change on agriculture in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) and explored whether agro-ecological practices can be expanded to mitigate these impacts. NL faces food security challenges due to limited agricultural land, short growing seasons, and a narrow range of crops. Climate change exacerbates these issues with extreme weather conditions. The study suggests that agro-ecological farming, which includes diversified and integrated farming systems, could make the agricultural sector more resilient to climate change and enhance food security (Reza & Sabau, 2022).

NL’s unique climate and geographical features influence its agricultural practices, and the region experiences specific environmental challenges that affect food production and security. Ecologically, the impact of industrial agriculture (chemical fertilizers and pesticides) has led to environmental degradation. Reza & Sabau (2022) posited that shifting towards agro-ecology is a potential solution to improve soil health, enhance biodiversity, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Practices such as crop rotation, intercropping, and the use of organic fertilizers are highlighted as beneficial for maintaining ecological balance

The political landscape in NL involves policies that support industrial agriculture, which is increasingly criticized for its negative environmental and social impacts (Reza & Sabau, 2022). The study suggested that policy reforms are necessary to support sustainable agricultural practices and ensure food security. Consequently, government support for agro-ecological practices is seen as crucial for the successful transition of farmers. There is also a growing awareness among farmers in NL about the environmental impact of their practices. Many farmers are adopting more sustainable methods and are interested in transitioning to agro-ecology, driven by the need to address food security and environmental sustainability.
