Earliest Archaeological Evidence of Wine Making

Students enrolled in Anthropology 272: Introduction to Archaeology may find a recent report in the Globe and Mail has relevance to the discussion of residue analysis in Chapter 7 of the Renfrew and Bahn text, Archaeology: Theories, Methods, and Practice. 

Archaeologists from Canada  are among a team of researchers who  have unearthed the earliest evidence of winemaking in the world.  Residue  from ceramic vessels found at Neolithic sites  located about 50 km south of the Georgian capital of Tbilisi has been identified as deriving from grapes used to make wine.    The cultural remains date to about 6000 BC, which is 600 to 1000 years earlier than remains previously reported from iran.
