  Hi Serhat,

  Me2u is running the "classic" version of Elgg.  With Elgg 1.0, the underlying structure of the application changed significantly.  If you would like to know more about Elgg itself, I'd suggest looking at the new version; if you're curious about Me2u, then download the "classic" version of Elgg. 

  With regards to the problems you're experiencing, I  assume that you've downloaded the current version of Elgg, 1.0.  Elgg 1.0 has a requirement for PHP 5.2.16.  It will not run on PHP4.x, and likely will cause errors on PHP 5.0 and 5.1.

  Elgg.org has a community around it that can help you with any configuration problems you might be having.  You can get there by visiting http://community.elgg.org.

  I've tried the latest version first. Because my server supports PHP 4.x by default, I had to add a line in .htaccess to make it work with PHP 5.x. Although this has worked with other LAMP apps, no luck with elgg. Then I tried an older elgg version (think v. 0.9.2) that was based on PHP 4, but I had similar problems.

  Could you please clarify what version number is the "classic"?

  I think I'm going to work on this during the x'mas break because elgg is a great idea, 1) it extends the capabilities of LMSs, 2) it creates a learning community, 3) anything based on LAMP draws my attention.

  0.9.2 is the "classic" version of Elgg, so you grabbed the right version there.  I would stress that if you're interested in Elgg that you focus on version 1.x (I think it's currently at version 1.1)

  If possible, I would highly recommend updating your PHP install to the latest version of PHP5.  PHP4 isn't supported by the PHP Group any longer, and most new web applications, such as Elgg 1.0, now require a minimum of PHP 5.2.  

  If you're only putting a line into .htaccess, and not actually updating the PHP5, it's likely that Elgg (and other PHP5 applications) will not run, as PHP5 includes new and modified functions and changes to the object model that are incompatible with PHP4.

  With regards to the error you're experiencing with Elgg 0.9.2, I'd recommend visiting the Elgg community pages.  It's likely that someone else has experienced the same error and a solution might be found there.

  It occurs to me that you might be using LAMP on someone else's host, and can't upgrade PHP.  If that's the case, you can download VMWare Player from

  http://www.vmware.com/download/player/

  and run a LAMP server from your own computer.  There's an Ubuntu virtual machine that you can download from here:

  You won't be able to use the site from outside your own machine (nor will anyone else), but it'll give you a good idea of how things generally work in Elgg.

  You guessed it right, I am using a 1and1.com linux package as the platform. Like you suggested, I'm going to fire up my trusted Kubuntu machine and do the installation on my own LAMP stack. The trouble is I don't have a static IP so my elgg site will be confined to my home office. Oh well...

  Incidentally, if you can map ports on your router, you can make use of a service like DynDNS.com to provide a subdomain name (ie: http://serhat.dynalias.com) and have the router direct traffic to your Kubuntu server.  It's a bit more complicated than I can really support here, but Google is your friend in figuring that scenario out.
