Breathing Room

Many apps have started to become available to help people manage their mental health. There is a new self help app that was created in Calgary, Alberta by the Canadian Institute of Natural and Integrative Medicine called the Breathing Room

Acccording to the website, the app is made for youth ages 13-24 who want to learn new ways to manage stress, anxiety and depression. The program has 8 modules including visualizations, fresh insights, music, movie and book suggestions, stories by young adults who have been through tough situations and jokes to brighten your mood.

The Breathing Room is evidence based, and has shown to improve wellbeing, help youth to be able to cope with life challenges, allow youth to feel more connected to themselves and their surroundings, and enhances self control over emotions.

I think this app would be extremely helpful for students, as it is so important that counselors work on their own mental wellbeing before being able to successfully counsel others. As mentioned in the textbook, a counselor can only take a client as far as they have been themselves.

This is a great posting!  When someone is dealing with stress, depression, and similar difficulties, having an option to use an App, as apposed to or along-with meeting with a therapist, can be a very good tool.

It is very important for a therapist to be aware of his/her mental health, most importantly, and also, to know how to keep their own mental health "challenges" (for lack of better wording) in check.  Also, inorder to understand and empathize appropriately with your clients' challenges with therapeutic process, it is helpful to do some yourself.
