Rockethub (similar to kickstarter) is being used by scientists (including people involved in participatory science) as a means to fund research. Examples of science projects seeking funding include:

I was told by a colleague that AU research office that even research that is crowdfunded needs to be improved by the VPA or his/her designate. Take a look in any case.
