Google announced Tuesday the launch of the Google eBookstore in Canada, which will allow Canadian users to download digital books that can be read on tablets, e-readers, and personal computers. The company also plans to give independent Canadian book sellers the opportunity to sell books online. Google says the Canadian eBookstore will boast a library of "thousands" of digital books for sale, as well as over 2 million public domain books available for free. The University of Calgary and Wilfrid Laurier University have announced that their bookstores are now selling Google eBooks. Financial Post | WLU News | uCalgary News
I note that there are millions of public domain books available now in Canada.

You are invited to an open session entitled,"Open Education: Team Building and the Business Case for OER" by Dr. Cable Green, Director of Global Learning at Creative Commons.
This session is a collaboration between the UNESCO-COL Chair in Open Educational Resources and the Centre for Learning Design and Development.
Presentation synopsis:
The Internet, increasingly affordable computing, open licensing, open access journals and open educational resources provide the foundation for a world in which a quality education can be a basic human right. Yet before we break the "iron triangle" of access, cost and quality with new models, we need to develop sustainable open business models with open policies: public access to publicly funded resources. Dr. Cable Green, Director of Global Learning at Creative Commons, will discuss specific examples where institution, provinces / states and nations have built effective business cases for OER. He will also explore how to build effective teams for institution / system-wide OER projects in a way that both builds high quality OER and takes your institutions through the cultural shift to open.
This session will take place in Room 1112, AU Edmonton at 1:30pm and will also be available via Adobe Connect at https://connect.athabascau.ca/r43989482/ .
Please RSVP to Lorene Schmidtke at lorenes@athabascau.ca prior to Dec 7th and indicate whether you will be attending in-person or via Adobe Connect.
Thank you in advance and we look forward to seeing you there!
