Week 6 Social Mobile Application: Part 1 of 3
Application name: Social Map Builder
My idea of a social mobile application centers on the idea of collaborative cartography. The idea was influenced by and builds on OpenStreetMap (http://www.openstreetmap.org/). Before diving into the detail of the app design it is important to talk about OSM. OSM is a community based map making open source project that allows volunteers to create/edit maps by uploading self-recorded geographical coordinates to the OSM server. Volunteers interested in contributing to OSM can upload GPS coordinates from wide range of supported devices including GPS navigation device (i.e. Garmin and TomTom) and smartphone. For instance, GPS Logger (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mendhak.gpslogger) is an Android based Smartphone that supports direct upload to OSM server using GPX upload API (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Api06#GPS_Traces). The data format is defined in GPX (http://www.topografix.com/gpx.asp) that is widely supported (http://www.topografix.com/gpx_resources.asp) format for defining GPS data that is similar to the KML (http://code.google.com/apis/kml/documentation/kml_tut.html) used in GoogleEarth. In fact, there are many software (http://www.mcrenox.com.ar/ge2gpx/) that supports conversion from KMZ/KML to GPX.
The research I have done so far help defining the functionalities for my Social Map Builder application. The system requirements are listed below:
1. Embedded GPS Chip: This requirement allows the device to receive GPS coordinates. It can be either GPS or A-GPS. 2. Modern Smartphone Operating Systems: iOS, Andriod, BlackBerry OS and Windows Phone 7 are the common platform in used today. Although the supported devices from the above OSes diverse greatly. However, the build-in developer APIs in all of them supports programmable interface to the underlying hardware components such as the A-GPS chip.
3. Basic Input Device: The most popular Smartphone supports tactile input via touch sensitive screen. But this is not mandatory for as long as there is a mean to interactive with the software, it can be done via keyboard, touch screen or even voice command.
4. Display Unit: Any kind of display unit that capable of displaying 24bit/32bit color resolution imagery.
5. Wireless Connectivity: In order to support real time communication to OSM server, a wide coverage wireless network is required. Protocols such GSM and CDMA are the most commonly used protocols. Device that supports both mobile telecommunication protocols has the advantage of higher degree of compatibility when travelling to different countries. WIFI can be used as an alternative for area that fall outside of cellular network coverage to upload GPS data at WIFI hotspots.
Many Smartphone satisfies all of the above requirements and iPhone/iOS is perhaps the most prominent platform for mobile application followed by Android based device. For the purpose of this week’s exercise I selected Windows Phone 7 OS as the development platform used in my screen design to showcase the various features and functions of the Social Map Builder application.
Application Features Overview:
At the highest level, there are two components to the design of this application -the server component and the client component. The former is responsible for receiving the collected GPS data from the client component as well as providing geospatial information to the client component. The client component is where I devote the majority of the discussion below.
As mentioned earlier, the primary focus of the design is directed towards collaborative map building and viewing. The cartography aspect of the design is heavily relied on the ability of smartphone phone to collect geospatial data. The data are then recorded, processed and finally uploaded to the backend server, ideally in real-time as the data is being collected and processed. Otherwise, the data upload will be delayed until a wireless connection is re-established. The collected data will be uploaded to OSM server as part of the collaborative map building effect in addition to the specific data collected and used by the Social Map Builder application.
The Social Map Builder application supports the following functions:
1. Ability to Start/Pause/Stop route tracking either through onscreen button press or voice command.
2. Ability to provide metadata to route along with the collected GPS data.
3. Ability to tie additional information to route such as realtime weather information.
4. Ability to take photos and relate them to the route.
5. Ability to view route information shared by other users.
Scenario:
The application consists of a screen that displays OSM/Bing base map centered on the current location of the application user. As the user moves along the sidewalk, bicycle trail or highway roads, the center point screen maintains at the current location of the user and the entire map view moves relative to the position of the center point. The user is given an option to start or stop geo-tracking at any given point. Upon invoking the “start tracking” action either through button press or voice commands. The Tracking Input Form appears on the screen allowing user to input various information related to the intended tracking route. For instance, to identify a route as hiking trail, the user can launch the application and invoke the “start tracking” option. Next, input route information such as the type (hike trail), road condition (i.e. rocky), etc. Once the information is saved, the GPS tracking component of the application is activated and begin logging each current GPS location in a predefined interval (i.e. 5 seconds). As a result, a series of latitude and longitude points are collected along with the metadata provided by the user which are then packaged and uploaded to the backend server in GPX format. At any point the user wishes to stop ongoing collection of GPS data pertaining to the current route. Either press the “Stop Tracking” button or speak voice command “Stop” to end the current session of route data collection. If the wireless connectivity is interrupted anytime during the collection of GPS data, the data will be saved locally until such time the connectivity is resumed to normal at which point the data will be uploaded. In addition to the user input route information and GPS data, weather information is also collected whenever possible. The information can be obtained from sources such as the weather network (http://www.theweathernetwork.com/rss/) via RSS based on the current geolocation of the user. Also, photos can be taken at any point during the open session of route data collection to provide more contextual information.
The aggregated information provided by the users is shared and viewed by everyone using the Social Map Builder. Route information uploaded to the server is kept anonymously by default unless changed explicitly by the user. The application would display the OSM base map and overlay route information on top with the ability to select or deselect a particular layer to find only the interested route.
