Excellent! The real credit for that goes to Michael Moore (http://bit.ly/1l3tlBu) for his transactional distance theory. A powerful idea.

Thanks Sandra - it certainly can! There can be more effort involved at first but it is so much more learning-efficient (and fun for all concerned) than a one-size-fits-all taught course that it more than pays its way.
  • I am often surprised at the occasional academic depth, reflectiveness and perspicuity of articles in the Art of Manliness website, which does have a slight tendency to (manly) frivolity much of the time and is as likely to discuss shaving as it is...

A discussion of the structural failings behind traditional university taught courses and some ideas about dealing with those issues.

"The massive enthusiasm and passion that results from a rich learning community of learners who are in control of their own learning has to be seen to be believed."

As someone who has facilitated learning on fully negotiated curriculum (negotiated by the learners), I'd echo this.  This can work even with the accreditation demanded by employers and educational institutions and working within those current structures.

I've just got back from a flying visit to the UK. The first thing I saw on arriving at the new and not at all unpleasant Heathrow Terminal 2 was Stephen Downes. Small world. We were getting luggage from different areas and lost each other in the...

Thank you very much for sharing this reflection.  From my perspective—that of a novice researcher—it is so nice to gain insight into what accomplished academics are thinking and how they are processing new ideas and experiences, such as those related here.  For the last while, I have been investigating ways to remotely access some of the many interesting conferences happening around the world and wish more could be done to make this important information more accessible.  Some conferences offer some live video feed—LASI 2014, for example—but, in many cases, if you are not able to attend in person, you are out of luck.   This might sound a little ridiculousness, but I am wondering if it would be possible to have conference attendees wear a “conference cam” or some such thing and livestream video via the Landing.

    • Jon Dron July 18, 2014 - 8:53am

Thanks Lorne! I like the idea of livestreaming via the Landing. If a livestream used one of our several supported video sites, I think it would be possible. Unfortunately, most conferences I attend that do provide streams tend to use arcane systems for the purpose, I guess because the live-streaming technology field is still fairly wide open (ustream is about the only notable player I can think of, though I've come across the odd use of Google Hangouts too).

I've thought since we started the Landing that it needs to support real-time stuff - there are a couple of very promising plugins under development now that will hopefully bring us at least chat and maybe more soon.

You are welcome.  Providing a tool aiding real-time communication would be very helpful.  I also wonder if it would be possible to embed something like Adobe Connect or BigBlueButton, as well.  This would make a little easier for students to collaborate, especially if they are working together in a cohort.

  • Serendipity is a wonderful thing! I love how simply sharing something here leads to more learning and connects ideas together. Thanks Mary.

Impressive! Any plan to develop an App version of Landing? That would be a great deal for students.

    • Jon Dron August 7, 2014 - 10:41am

Thanks Hongxin. We don't have detailed plans for that, but the Landing does play nicely with mobile devices since I rewrote the theme. I guess we could wrap an app around it, much like many of the mobile apps for stores etc do, though I'm not sure what value we could add through doing that apart from providing a nice icon (the same goes for all those mobile apps that do the same!).

What would you like to see in such an app? One thing I'd like on my mobile devices though would be 'send-to-the-landing', so I could share bookmarks more easily from iOS and Android. I'm seeking volunteers to write that! It's a little complicated because we use the central authentication system of the university, which makes it trickier to send login credentials than it might otherwise be.

  • This is a paper for IJLM that I wrote with Terry Anderson, exploring how the distributed nature of teaching and learning in social technologies significantly messes with Michael Moore's theory of transactional distance in all sorts of interesting...

Too funny! It appears to be almost a clone of the old "Viewmaster", except it takes a smartphone instead of those 'dial of pictures' 3d reels.

Too bad it's google, as that means no iPhone version for a while.

Too funny indeed and yet so cool. Actually, I think it's much closer to the original Victorian stereoscopes than the Viewmaster in style and design. But what an update! I'm guessing that it might be tricky for Google to patent this as as it is a very obvious idea that simply assembles very commonplace 2D VR/AR with a very old Victorian technology. NFC integration is the only notably unusual thing, but it doesn't seem particuarly critical to its operation, so there should be nothing to stop anyone re-implementing something very like this on any device.
