As Heffernan brought to light in the article “An Interface of One’s Own”, what I thought was my was my grammar godsend may actually be a limitation. The technology I am referring to is Microsoft Word. In week 5, we covered how to outline and draft a critical review. The critical review assignment was the first time in which I followed these processes. I always organize my paper, but not in such detail. The outline was wonderful, I avoided the usual painsaking long ordeal it takes to get the paper started. The outline kept me organized, on task, and on track. After reading Heffernan’s article, I considered the reason why I never write a draft and edit later may be the autocorrect grammar and spelling function in Microsoft Word. I consider grammar and spelling to be my biggest weaknesses in writing; therefore, I cannot pass these errors without fixing them. I end up spending way more time editing work that may or may not make it to the finished product then if I wrote the drafts, edited, and then proofread. From the beginning of the writing process, I overanalyze every detail. By the time I get to the proofread stage, I start to loose interest and motivation. For the next paper, I will try writing the drafts in a program such as Scrivener or WriteRoom and then I will transfer the final draft into WriteRoom in order to edit.
