Tony Bates (YouTube Creates New Section to Highlight College Content) notes that the content on much of YouTube EDU is more fluff than stuff. The videos posted by colleges and universities are more promotional and sports videos.
It amounts to a wasted opportunity to provide a rich, online, learning experience. Bates notes that the type of content posted needs to encourage quality learning (critical thinking, reflection, analysis) and notes that merely publishing lectures of talking heads is not enough.
"At worst, it is nothing more than vanity publishing; at best, it could be an extremely valuable resource for many learners who do not otherwise have access to the top research and thinking."
The big question will be how we utilize this medium to provide this quality learning. What will it look like? How will we recognize it?
