Problems logging in and saving pages (September 2022): Revision

Last updated September 27, 2022 - 12:40pm by Athabasca Landing

There is currently a network configuration problem that is causing issues for Landing users when they try to log in to the site, or to save pages (usually in a large group). Something between the Landing and other servers on the local network (notably the login and mail servers) is causing traffic to be lost or delayed.

If this is happening to you, we apologize for the inconvenience.

Workaround for login problems

If you are having difficulties logging in, after you have successfully authenticated to to the login server,  keep trying. Click the login link until you get in. Most users are able to get in after 5-10 attempts, though it can (on rare occasions) take much longer. If you are one of the unlucky few for whom it is taking more than 20 or 30 attempts, if possible, try switching to a different browser, or clearing the cache and cookies for the Landing of your current browser. If you can't do that, close your current browser, wait for a few minutes, and try again.

Workaround for problems saving your posts

If, when saving a post, you receive a "504 Gateway timeout" message, or a message that the server was taking too long to respond, don't panic: your post was almost certainly saved. Return to the Landing to check whether your post was actually saved. If you are not sure where you saved it, select "Your Activity" from the "You" menu - it should appear at or near the top of the list of activities.  On rare occasions, notably (sometimes) when saving wiki sub-pages, the post itself may not have been fully saved but, in almost all other cases, your post should be where you saved it. The reason it occurs is that, after saving your post, the Landing tries to send notification messages to others in the group via email and, because of the network problems, it very occasionally fails connect to the mail server. This is why it usually only occurs in large groups, when there are many emails to be sent.
