I chose the final course work I completed in my MDDE 701: Advanced Research Methods to demonstrate my ability to design a blended learning course with instructional design consideration (MDE Competencies 2 group), and to apply new technology in my teaching (MDE Competencies 3 group).
In 2008, I collected data from my teaching class on blended learning course design through forums on Moodle. My knowledge and skills on learning tools, Moodle, and forums, were acquired from this MDE course. Thus, this demonstrates my application of the communication technologies I learned from MDE to my teaching practice in a real-world environment, referring to competency 3.5. In addition to the different sources such as Moodle books and Moodle online events outside the MDE, I also learned about the use of blogs and wiki on the platform and applied them in my teaching.
On the course design dimension, I applied the blended learning course design of face-to-face and online learning as the intervention in my research. This format was particularly considered effective because it has the merits of both face-to-face and online teaching and learning. It took the form of combined synchronous oral discussions in classes and asynchronous written discussions in online classes. The course design on blended learning was not exactly dealt with in the instructional design courses in MDE because the MDE focus was on distance learning, which most likely supposed that having face-to-face teaching sessions between the instructor and students was not possible; however, it was inevitable for me to choose this course design for the majority of the MDE course assignments because my main teaching field is that of face-to-face mode in the traditional school. Therefore, designing the merits that both face-to-face and online learning hold into a blended learning course design is the maximum application possible for me to incorporate what I have learned in the MDE for into the instructional design aspects of competencies, referring to competency 2.7.
