How technology liberates and constrains

Think about the ways that technologies affect how you learn and/or teach.

  • Have you ever been constrained by a technology that prevented you from learning or teaching the way you wanted to learn or teach?
  • Was there ever a time when the computer said 'no', and prevented you from doing what you wanted to do?
  • Was there a time when you needed more skill than you possess in order to use a technology? Note here that it is useful to distinguish between the skill needed to operate a tool and the skill needed to do what you want with it. For example, the odds are that you can use a pencil but that doesn't mean you can draw the kind of picture or diagram you might want to draw with it.
  • Are there any benefits in constraints? Do constraints always lead to the inability to create? That's a straw man, of course as I hope we all agree that constraints are ofen useful for the creative process: but why? What kind of constraints? Think of examples if you can of both positive and negative effects on you.
